ESTABLISHED IN 1986 (ACTUALLY WE’RE NOT REALLY SURE WHEN, BUT THAT’S THE YEAR WE’RE GOING WITH BASED ON CERTAIN DOCUMENTS), EVERYONE ALWAYS ASKS, “WHAT DOES 8 FAT FAT 8 MEAN?” OR “HOW DID YOU COME BY THE NAME?”
SO LET US TELL YOU THE FULL LONG VERSION.
BACK IN THE ‘80S, SAI AND HIS FRIENDS DECIDED TO OPEN UP A BAR. WE DON’T KNOW WHOSE IDEA IT WAS TO NAME IT SO, BUT IN CHINESE CULTURE, THE NUMBER 8 (BAAT) IS A LUCKY NUMBER BECAUSE IN CHINESE IT RHYMES WITH FAT (FAAT = 發), WHICH MEANS “TO DEVELOP” AND THE EXTENDED MEANING OF “TO PROSPER”. THE BEST EXAMPLE IS WHEN WE WISH FRIENDS AND FAMILY “KUNG HEE FAT CHOY” AT CHINESE NEW YEAR. AND WHEN YOU DOUBLE SOMETHING, IT DOUBLES THE MEANING, SO WE HOPE FOR DOUBLE THE LUCK AND DOUBLE THE PROSPERITY.
COINCIDENTALLY, NOTICE (發) IS COMMONLY SPELLED FAT. AND IN OLDEN DAYS, THE RICH TENDED TO BE FAT BECAUSE THEY ATE WELL. THAT OUR NAME JUST HAPPENS TO LEAVE AN IMPRESSION ON YOU HOPEFULLY WILL MAKE YOU CURIOUS ENOUGH TO COME IN SOMEDAY AND FIND OUT WHAT WE ARE ALL ABOUT.

Our Journey Since 1986
From humble beginnings as a local watering hole to becoming Honolulu's beloved neighborhood bar and grille, 8 Fat Fat 8 has been serving up good times and great memories for over three decades.
1986: Where It All Began
Opening our doors in the '80s, we quickly became a favorite spot for locals looking for a friendly atmosphere.
1990s
Expanding our menu to include Chinese and local dishes, we evolved from a local bar into a true neighborhood gathering spot.
2000s
Introducing a pool table to the darts and karaoke to create the perfect blend of food, drinks, and entertainment.
Our First Karaoke Night
The night we introduced karaoke became an instant hit, starting a tradition that continues today.
Menu Expansion
Since the late 2000s, we expanded our menu with our core menu still available til today.
Sports Bar
Adding our large screen projector to our multiple TVs has transformed us into the perfect spot for watching the big game with friends.
Community Recognition
